Ramsay McMaster - Tribute

A Tribute to Ramsay McMaster who sadly passed away on 29th December 2011

We are very sad to announce that Ramsay passed away on the 29th December 2011 doing what he loved.  His death was sudden and unexpected, however, he passed away in the company of his wife Caroline and kids Zander and Edie.  He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Here is a short tribute to the family man and golf fanatic that we all knew and loved.  Please do add your tributes to the page below.

Ramsay McMaster Golf Physio

Ramsay’s work as a golf fitness expert shaped and influenced so many people’s lives. A true pioneer and friend of golf, Ramsay will be greatly missed. With fondness we remember a wonderful person with boundless energy, vision and passion.  Ramsay was a full time golf physical therapist, fitness consultant and most importantly loving husband and father.

Ramsay's love for the game of golf originated from the "home of golf" Scotland where he grew up. His passion for the game was easily identified at an early age when he played 81 holes in one day at his home club of Bridge of Allan at the age of 14 years. This nine-hole course had the unique position of being on the side of a Scottish mountain and it was humorously stated that "you needed one leg shorter than the other to play it."

Ramsay was an 'A' grade golfer and won Victoria’s largest Pro-Am at Portsea Golf Club, in between being a full time golf physical therapist, fitness consultant, husband and father.

  • He established arguably the World’s first ever Golf Injury Clinic, The Melbourne Golf Injury Clinic. This has serviced over 4,500 amateur and golf club golfers of all ages from all over the world, and has provided over 50,000 fitness programs and golf specific treatments.
  •

  • Ramsay's golf specific screening and profiling has been used by many of the world’s top Tour players. He was the golf fitness consultant to some of the world's leading PGA Tour Pros. These include the PGAs of Australia, New Zealand, Britain and Ireland where he wrote their golf fitness and injury prevention curriculums.
  •

  • Ramsay also worked closely with leading coaches. These include Steve Bann, Jim McLean and the Head Coaches of England, Scotland, Norway. Switzerland, Belgium, New Zealand, China, Taiwan and Australia. He also worked with Pete Cowen whose players include Henrik Stenson, Thomas Bjorn, Lee Westwood, Graeme McDowell and Simon Dyson.
  •

  • Other players serviced by Ramsay include US Open Winner Alison Nicholas, US Amateur Champion Matt Kuchar, the World's Leading Amateur in 2005 Michael Sim, Australian Amateur Champion Andrew Martin and 2005 European Challenge Tour Order of Merit Winner and Scandanavian Masters Winner Marc Warren.   Other new up and comming players include Oliver Wilson, Marc Warren, Soren Hansen, Alex Noren, Michael Sim, Aron Price, Danny Willett, Rick Kulacz and winner of the 2008 Challenge Tour Order of Merit, David Horsey.
  •

  • Ramsay gave lectures all over the world to over 1,000 physical therapists, trainers, sport science and PGA professionals worldwide and is a world leader in this area of golf. He wrote two books Get Fit for Golf  (Parts 1 and 2) and produced five software programs: The Training for Golf; The Body and Golf; The Golf Fitness System Level 1 and 2; and The Club Golfer CDs which are used worldwide at all levels as golf specific training systems.
  •

  • Ramsay was perhaps the pre-eminent golf physical therapist worldwide.   His unexpected loss is a big loss for the game of golf and for everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
  •

Ramsay is survived by his wife Caroline and children Zander and Edie.

Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this most difficult time.

Please feel free to add your personal tribute below.

We had the pleasure of working with Ramsay on this website and some pocket lessons over the past few years. His enthusiasm and positive attitude was infectious and our lives are much richer for having had the privilege of knowing him. Ramsay leaves us too early and like everyone we are deeply saddened. Not by the extraordinary life he has lived but for the family & friends he has left behind. Caroline, Zander, Edie - we are thinking about you now & always. Much love Nina, Family & all the crew from sunnyside & stringers, Sorrento where he was forever known and will always be remembered as the 'carrot cake' man xx

I'm eternally blessed to have

I'm eternally blessed to have known Ramsay McMaster. Although I only worked with Ramsay for three days at a First Tee Golf Camp, the short time I spent with him has had a lasting influence on my life.

I met him in the summer of 2009. He was a fitness advisor to a group of top First Tee golfers from around the world -- I was one of the camp counselors. His energy and passion for golf was a bit overwhelming at first, but I quickly became inspired by it.

It was easy to be in awe of Ramsay -- it was clear his knowledge of golf fitness was unmatched. But what was more impressive to me were his intentions as a golf instructor. Whether Ramsay was instructing junior golfers or world-class professionals, his level of commitment was the same. His purpose was simple -- to help golfers take better care of themselves, both on and off the course.

I was an injury-prone college golfer at the time, and after a little prodding, I convinced Ramsay to work on my ailing back. Since I was a counselor and not a First Tee player, Ramsay was not supposed to work on me -- but he did any ways, sacrificing his lunchtime to do so.

"I can tell that you care," Ramsay told me. "Those are the people I like to help."

Thanks to Ramsay, I was able to extend my college-playing career, which was in serious jeopardy before I met him. I'd love to say that thanks to his fitness regimen I became a top college golfer. That was not the case, but I took something even more meaningful from Ramsay.

Ramsay was adamant about the importance of building a team, a group of people that you must surround yourself with to be successful. While Ramsay was speaking about competitive golf, he was aware that his message was much broader.

The endless time and energy that Ramsay put into his work created a worldwide network of people who became better golfers because of him. But I'm sure that there are countless others like me that also became better people, using Ramsay's passion as a measuring stick for success, for endeavors both inside and outside the world of golf.

I am so deeply saddened that the McMaster family has lost their team leader, and wish them the best through their very difficult time.

Ramsay, a unique person in

Ramsay, a unique person in every way! You will be sadly missed by all your friends around the globe. Our thoughts are with your family at this sad time.
Much love. Mairead & Gary xx Stirling, Scotland.

Ramsay I only knew you for

Ramsay I only knew you for less than a year but you helped me to strengthen my knee and thus prolong my survival in the world of high handicap amateur golf. Much more importantly, apart from our business relationship you became a real personal friend and I am just so devastated that, three hours after we had coffee and I introduced you, Caroline and Zander and Edie to my wife, Miyoko, you passed away so unexpectedly.

I am privileged to have known you and counted you as a friend and I will always remember you.

Our heartfelt feelings go to Caroline and the children at this saddest of times.

With love

Ramsay was one crazy kat and

Ramsay was one crazy kat and that's what I loved about him!
Unique, passionate, noisy, smart, fun loving and a joy to be with, so much so that it is a shock, a disbelief to hear of his passing. One of my fondest memories of Ramsay and his amazing character and love for golf was while I was lecturing for the Chek Institute at a golf conditioning seminar in Sweden. I wanted to give the class 'a dose of Ramsay' and had an article he had given me to read. Ramsay loved to 'share' his knowledge, that's what made him so very special but I still wanted to double check with him personally and called him on his mobile, thinking he was in Scotland.

He took my call and we chatted about everything but the article. He then wanted to speak to the class so I placed him on speaker phone, a bonus for the class to experience a long distance and hilarious explanation on an aspect of golf conditioning from the man himself. Ramsay was in full stream ahead, so lively that he may as well have been in the room. We then heard a 'plonk' as if something was falling into water. Ramsay, 'where are you?', I asked. Without missing a beat, his reply was, 'in the bath in Australia, I just dropped the soap'. The visual of Ramsay bathing, naked AND sharing his info many time zones away was so priceless the class exploded! Sheesh! Ramsay, I'm gonna miss you mate.

Caroline, Zander and Edie - my heartfelt condolences go to you at this sad time. I also wanted to thank you for sharing your husband and dad with all of us in the golf world. He made a difference and definitely left this world a brighter, better place than when he arrived.
With much love

Ramsay you were one of a

Ramsay you were one of a kind! I will never forget the way that everytime I saw you there was a new exercie or a new piece of equipment which you had come up with. That enthusiasm epitomised you and inspired others. The way in which you invited my Mum and I to your home a day after meeting us is a true reflection of your kind heart. You will be forever missed by all those who knew you. You had such a great impact in your short life. My deepest sympathies are with Caroline, Edie, Zander and all those at the Melbourne Golf Injury Clinic at this extremely difficult time.

Ramsay, the most passionate,

Ramsay, the most passionate, caring, funny, brilliant person I have ever met. I am proud to be able to call you my friend, you shaped my career, loved my family and made me laugh. I only have good memories mate, especially the phone calls whilst in my car telling people the line might drop out because you were in a bad area - Adelaide! We are all hurting and will look after Caroline, Zander and Edie.

Ramsay, I feel as if Id known

Ramsay, I feel as if Id known you too late sometimes. Despite Kevvy teaching me all my golf, Im most thankful he introduced me to you, as you are not just a physiotherapist, but an inspiration to all those around you. All the memories of you in my head is a good one, never ever a bad one...I wish Id known you much longer. I know you may have even been disappointed with me when I did not return to Gold Coast and Melbourne to continue our work together. You gave me a plan, a goal, not only in golf but in life. You taught me too much for me to just say you are my golf physiotherapist. You are my friend, my teacher, my mentor and someone like a role model to me, a father figure even. You have such a great family, I have not felt more at home anywhere than when I stayed at your house, you and your family welcomed me with open arms, and seriously, Caroline is a great cook! you cook so healthy as well... And if you are reading this, (Caroline, Edie or Zander), I want to thank you again for having me over in Melbourne and making me feel so at home. You are one of the most special people i know, and definitely one of the nicest. Edie and Zander you are great kids too, and you will be something special when you 2 grow up, just like your father was, and is to me. And Ramsay mate, rest assured, Im still learning from you everyday, and will always remember your teaching to work hard, and keep "grinding away". Thank you for everything you have given me. Your teaching, your skills, even your cup of coffee or a piece of the sweetest watermelon after climbing the sandhill in Sorrento with the bull ants. Or when you ran through the street beside your house for miles and miles infront of me pushing me and were so enthusiastic to show people around how your equipments work on the street. I cant say it enough, thank you.The Greatest physiotherapist.

Ramsay, Im writing to you in first person because I hope you can hear me when ure up there watching down on me, training all the angels above to be "tough". I wish you were here to just tell me "you're weak!" at least one more time. I do feel pretty weak with you not here right now mate. And after all, you are the only one who ever dares to. RIP my friend, my teacher, my mentor.

Still missing sorrento mate,
Kahn Karnchanachari

Ramsey, you took me under your wing fresh out of college. I instantly loved your complete passion for golf & knew you were way ahead of your time- you still are.
I have had many fabulous times with you in Australia, USA, England & here in Dublin. You have introduced me to world leaders in the game. You gave me so many opportunities. And you always checked in to see how I was doing- never taking time zones into consideration! Who will call me at 2am now?

Ramsay Speechless - something

Ramsay
Speechless - something you never suffered from! You have left us way too early, we had so much more we wanted to ask. Thanks for touching mine and so many lives along the way - you are just an amazing man. It was a pleasure and honour to have known you and we will make sure we continue your work.
Matt

We first met you on one of

We first met you on one of your "Train Like A Pro" camps at Moonah Links. Even though we were a lot younger and immature back then, you still had one of the biggest impacts on both our golfing and personal lives. Since then we have done a lot more of those amazing camps, and every single one has been better and more eye-opening than the last.

You truly were a huge influence on the us, the entire golfing world, and the area of golf physiotherapy. It would have been nothing without your input and hard work.

Our condolences to your wife and kids, Ryan, and anyone else who's life you have changed forever.

From the Mansfield Boys.

Ramsay. Meeting you for the

Ramsay.
Meeting you for the first time as a Young junior from a country golf club I didn't know what to expect. You getting us to do these strange exercises that we would have never thought would help our golf, like showing us and telling us to "push the fat ladie on the bus!" and doing the most brutal sand dune run any body could do!.Having the expierience with you and Ryan have completely changed me as a golfer and a person. I wish I had seen you more often. I will keep my pistols firing and try and keep toddy out of the cookie jar! I will miss seeing you Ramsay as you where one of my idols. Thankyou Ramsay for being in my life although for such a short time you made a huge impact.
RIP Ramsay gone far to soon.

Thoughts are with your family and close friends.
Brandon Kay.

Ramsey, To say you were a

Ramsey,
To say you were a monumental influence on my life is an understatement. In the short time I knew you, you taught me so many things that I didn't know before. You taught me to believe in my self, along with the power a dream can have. You taught me how to reach a goal and to not settle for second best. Then on top of that you influenced me in the brilliant game of Golf. For those few things, I thank you. It is unfortunate that the world has lost such a brilliant man who's impacted others lives to the greatest extent. It is unfortunate that I wont see you at the top of a dune telling me to push my limits. It's unfortunate that I didn't know you better. But I know, that you will be looking down on every one of your "Train Like A Pro" students encouraging them to keep with there golf. I hope you rest in peace.

From the deepest point in my heart, I give all your family and friends the deepest condolences. I will miss you, the world will miss you Ramsey. But we will never forget you.
Sincerely,
Jake Cripps.

Ramsay, on day one working at

Ramsay, on day one working at your Melbourne Golf Injury you asked for a 20 year relationship. Tragically, it has been cut short at 13. However, those years have been full of wonderful experiences, happiness and inspiration for me. Your selfless sharing of knowledge has made me the therapist I love being. I have been priviledged to work for and along side you and will miss you dearly.
My heartfelt condolences to Caroline, Zander and Edie.

Ramsey You thankfully fixed

Ramsey
You thankfully fixed my rotator cuff injury and frozen shoulder. I got to know you over many chats during my two years of physio treatments, as we are the same age and you had such a friendly, open manner. I then found out, after bumpimg into you in Canterbury St, where our holiday home is,that your holiday home was up the road too. I was only speaking to you as we passed in our cars on the 28th Dec 2011 and you kindly asked us in for New Year's Eve drinks. I said that we had guests too but that we must catch up this year for a drink as we hadn't managed to last year.
I couldn't believe it when I saw the ambulances at your home and found out the shocking news. I had heard lovely things about your wife Caroline and your children from Ramsey, but, as I had not met them, I felt as though it was not appropriate to interfere. I would just like to pass on my sincere condolences to Caroline and the children and know that such a great guy will be sorely missed.

Goodbye Ramsay

In 1998 I had my first session with you Ramsay, one ill never forget, you bent my wrist back and dug your elbow into my forearm, the pain was horrible! I remember a time on a putting green, warming up before some tournament and over herd some guys talking about how Ramsay Cains you.. I just shook my head and laughed.
You are an inspiration, not only a great teacher but a genuine person, who everybody loved, you will be sadly missed, good bye my friend.

Ramsey

You have been an inspriation to me. Ever since I met you and the team in 2004 it has been a great journey and honour getting you know you. Throughout the time I have known you, you have been so kind in so many ways to help me and the development of my golf coaching. It was fantastic to spend so much time with you and Lumsden and share so many laughs over the years.

My thoughts are with your family Carloine, Zander and Edie.

It has been a great honour to know you and your enthusiam will stay with me forever.

I just heard the news tonight

I just heard the news tonight and was absolutely shocked. Ramsey would come to the Sorrento Hotel every opportunity he could get. He would book out our private rooms for group dinners with the people he had been coaching and I was looking forward to having him in for another big dinner later this Month.
Even if he came in with Caroline, Edie & Zander he would always make the effort to come find me and say hi. He had a fantastic aura about him, always smiling and laughing, always asked after my parents. A genuinely lovely man who will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers are with Caroline, Edie & Zander at this tragic time.

Wow! I still cannot get my

Wow! I still cannot get my head around the events of the last few days. I keep hoping to wake up from a really bad dream. Over the past 10 years, Ramsay became much like a brother to me. Like many other innovators, he walked the line between madman and genius. His innate intellegence and ability to think "oustide the box" allowed him to roll out programs that challenged the best minds in the game. He "blew people's brains apart" and forced all of us to push the boundaries of what we knew and what we believed was possible. He was always 3-5 years ahead of the rest of the industry. We are all going to miss his encouragement, enthusiasm amd twisted sense of humor. Over the hundreds of hours I spent with Ramsay, he often spoke of his commitment and sense of responsiblity to "leave the golf world better than he found it". Based on the comments on this post and the people I have spoken to around the world over the last several days, I think it is safe to say he accomplished his mission. Ramsay... Rest easy my friend. I am proud of you. Very well done. Your spirit lives on in all of us. We will continue to push forward on the platform you built for us. I am forever grateful for your friendship, love and for your presnce in my life. I am really going to miss you.

As for Caroline, Zander and Ede, I cannot begin to find words to express my feelings of sorrow and sadness for your loss. The hardest part for me is knowing what to say to you. Ramsay loved all of you deeply and you were at the front of the line with him. Please know that Suzi, Jay and I send our love. We are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers. Let us know if there is anything we can do. We are here for you always. We love you...

Kevin, Suzi and Jay Kirk

Ramsay, You were a good

Ramsay,
You were a good friend, a great man and a golf fitness nut! I remember the first time we met in Melbourne. We did a screening, then we went to eat and you got me doing Spiderman crawls on the street, Spikey Ball in each hand and people walking by wondering what we were doing. Those were fun times, as were the times we met up in Dubai and Georgia. I learned a lot about fitness for golf from you and you were always very generous with your time.
Thank you for everything mate. I will miss you.

Ramsey was one of those guys

Ramsey was one of those guys who was so full of energy and life. Every time I spoke to him on the phone or spent time with him, you couldn't help be be enthused and motivated. He was always thinking and always developing new tests and new exercises to help Golfers.
I first met Ramsey in my first few months with the PGA and found him almost overwhelming. He had so much knowledge and understanding about the human body and how it worked in relation to the gf swing. He was a huge influence in the way we developed our sports science offering and this can be clearly seen in both our printed and online material but also in the gym and on the residential
Sessions.
Ramsey also played  a big part in the CPD seminars. He was a very popular presenter and always gave a massive amount of information in his usual whirlwind fashion packing two or three days worth of knowledge into one session. That was one of the things about Ramsey, he was always giving. He was much of one for material reward, he just wanted to help Golfers and coaches and PGAs. So many times he would send me things he had written or produced and tell me just to use it.
He was one of the experts behind the TPI development right from the start and continued to produce work of the highest quality. Ramsey was always working on the next project and so much was not only cutting edge but based on practical experience not just theory. His stuff really worked.
I last saw him just a few weeks ago when he came over to the Belfry to work with the Birmingham University golf team for the weekend. Again he had new approaches and his passion for his subject just shone through. Those students/players benefited greatly from the weekend. As usual Ramsey was off to another country and another gig straight away, but left himself minimal time to get to Heathrow because he wanted to spend the maximum time with the golfers. I know that I, the PGA Training Academy, PGA Professionals and golf generally have lost someone who was a great friend and influence.

When I heard the news of

When I heard the news of Ramsay,s passing it was of total shock and disbelief. Having spent time with Ramsay at moonah links with DLGA Korea it was amazing to see the depth of knowledge and enthusiasm Ramsay showed for the game of golf and for sport. All he wanted to do was to help and give people the best opportunity to get as good as they could be. I was fortunate to spend Christmas with Ramsay and his family in their beautiful home and it was one of the best Christmas possible.

To Caroline, Zander, Edie my thought are with you but know that Ramsay was loved and respected all across the world and will be sadly missed. The world has lost a great man, father and the world of sport has lost one of its brightest lights.

I became a better coach thanks to Ramsay and for that I will be forever great full.

Rest in peace Ramsay we will miss you.

Still yet to meet someone with as much passion for anything in life as Ramsay Mcmaster was for golf improvement. I will continue to walk backwards on a treadmill whilst doing pistols with a theraband in your honour sir!

You will be missed by so many people.

James Heath

Ramsay, You were the man who

Ramsay, You were the man who got me involved with elite golf. I watched in amazement and did my best to learn what the hell you were on about and what the hell you were saying in the first couple of years and then sat back and appreciated and admired your giving nature and the success you had with the players you worked with. I'll always strive to give and succeed the way you did.
I wish we got to catch up this week for that round of golf down Sorrento way or a last red wine down at the Pub.
Still can't quite believe it.
I'll smash another dune for you mate.

Cheers
Scott Williams

When I heard the news of

When I heard the news of Ramsay,s passing it was of total shock and disbelief.

I met Ramsay the first time at Valcluse Hospital Moreland Rd Brunswick in 1995 after having complications after a knee reconstruction he was able to get me walking withinm weeks after surgery.

I was extremley grateful and the knowledge and expertise was at a highest level and as I did not know him well he was like a brother to me in the way he treated and respected me as a person.
As a keen golfer I was able to have great conversations over treatment which enjoyed during my weekly visits.

Ramsay will be sadly missed his smile and enthasiusm I Will remember for the rest of my life.
My condolences to all Family Members and staff at the Golf Clinic.

Rest in Peace you memory will live on.

Ramsay, you were my

Ramsay, you were my introduction to golf, initially in London and then in Australia. Your infectious zest for life, has inspired me well beyond my work. You were incredibly generous with your time and knowledge and I owe you so much.

I and others will try to continue where you left off, but it will be difficult without your booming enthusiasm to lead us. My prayers, thoughts and love go out to Caroline, Zander and Edie.

Ramsay, we will miss your

Ramsay, we will miss your ability to light up a room with your personality, to improve those around you with your passion and make us laugh by just being "you". You gave so much and in return asked for so little, the world is a much poorer place for your passing.
To Caroline, Edie and Zander, our thoughts are with you at this very sad time

Goodbye Ramsay. Deeply saddened by the tragic news. I first met you 10 years ago in Stirling on your Get Fit for Golf course and have been inspired ever since. You will never be forgotten. Our thoughts are with your family at this sad time. Sam and Denis Durnian.

Everyone at Australian Golf

Everyone at Australian Golf Digest magazine is deeply, deeply saddened to hear of Ramsay's passing.
He was one of our finest (and favourite) contributors - pioneering healthy-golfer articles in Australian golf publications, but far more than that he was a passionate and infectiously lively character who we loved spending time with. Ramsay's ideas and methods will remain for many years to come. We will miss him as a professional, as a valued contributor and as a friend. We offer our condolences to Caroline, Edie, Zander and the whole family at this sad and difficult time.
